  • My Top Newsmakers of 2011

This was the first year I worked professionally in the news biz — and while I’ve been told every year is a big news year, I felt this year was especially crazy. My taste in news generally runs local, so I was excited to see a few scandalous local politicians, some terrible decisions by Mayor Bloomberg, and a special election in my time working in a newsroom. These aren’t ranked so much in importance, but in my delight in reading about them. So, before that ball drops, here are my favorite newsmakers of 2011:

Cathie Black. It was hard to even stay mad at Mayor Bloomberg’s selection of the ex-magazine editor who had probably only seen Queens from an airport tarmac. It took only weeks for this questionable decision to turn Jay-Leno-in-primetime bad — and then all that shit just kept rolling downhill, culminating in her early-morning firing. In 2010 she asked the city to give her a chance. ”Don’t judge someone that you have never even met,” she said in an interview. She toured a school in each borough in early January, saying that she was excited to meet the students (who knew there were so many black ones!, she thought!) It didn’t take long for her to roll her eyes and yell back at meetings with parents. At least Joel Klein had the decency to ignore parents and focus on Brickbreaker. In mid-January she made a bad birth control joke at a meeting to address overcrowded schools in Manhattan. In February, she said she “couldn’t really tell” how teacher layoffs would hurt schools. What the fuck was she doing in any public office? Maybe those emails will provide some clarity (if they’re ever released from the Chamber of Secrets.)

Cuddle Cops. Let’s, for a moment, not even bring up the verdict of this trial and remember one thing: Officer Kenneth Moreno sang “Living on a Prayer.”
David Weprin. He brought Bowzer along on his campaign. Thank you.
Barbara Sheehan. After she plied her allegedly abusive husband with 11 bullets as he shaved in their Howard Beach home in 2008, reports say a neighbor clapped for her. About time, I guess. Sheehan looked the part of the battered wife — tired, sad, still a little beaten. She went on trial for his murder but something weird happened in court: She seemed to flourish there. She looked less tired. Her skin seemed brighter. Domestic violence support groups came out to the trial, making sure to mention that while they didn’t necessarily condone women killing their abusive husbands, they supported her. A jury acquitted Barbara Sheehan of murder, buying her claim that she shot him in self defense. She’ll still spend time in jail for gun charges. But abusive men everywhere (especially those who like having sex dressed up in a diaper) should watch their backs.
Hurricane Irene. You shut the subways down and had Mayor Bloomberg say the word “Rockaway” more times in one news conference than in his 10 years in office. And thanks to you, 32 percent of the windows in New York City will have badly-taped Xs on them until the next hurricane blows through.
William Boyland. For somebody who pretends his real-life is Mafia Wars, this guy certainly played a lot of Cityville. It was a wonder he even found the time to get involved with a bribery scheme (INVOLVING CARNIES) but he did.
Carl Kruger. Nice house. Not as big as the Big House will be, though.
That Girl Involved in the Weiner Scandal Who Was Voted Most Likely To Be Involved in a Tabloid Scandal. Her name is Genette Cordova. And unlike most people (I was voted most likely to succeed, and here I am), her Senior Superlative came true.  Good for you Genette. And thank you, from news people everywhere, for that photo from the yearbook.
